CAL Assembler Version 2 Release 2.00 - Advantages and Differences

By Paul Falde

SN-0232

A new assembler is available for Cray Computer Systems. The new assembler, called CAL Version 2, is intended to replace Cray's current assembler, CAL Version 1. For such a replacement to occur, there must be advantages for the end user. Some of the advantages include portability among different Cray machines, a more friendly user environment, and many new enhancements and features to better exploit Cray's hardware. This paper is written for experienced CAL assembly language programmers; it highlights many of the advantages and differences of the new CAL Version 2 Assembler.

This paper is divided into three sections. The first section discusses portability of the new assembler and targetability of assembly language codes. The second section introduces many of the new features and enhancements now available to CAL programmers. Finally, the third section identifies most of the differences between the old and new CAL assemblers.
