The Super Famicom is the Japanese release of what was known in the UK as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It was Nintendo's second home console. It introduced advanced graphics and sound capabilities compared with other consoles at the time. Additionally, development of a variety of enhancement chips (which were integrated on game cartridge circuit boards) helped to keep it competitive in the marketplace. Via the Super FX chip, the SNES was able to run some of the first three-dimensional video games on consoles, beginning with Star Fox.
