With the release of a version of ARTEMIS that not only contains a large number of new features but also significantly raisesmost systemlimits, it has proved impossible to update the Reference Manual by the insertion of a few changed or additional pages. A new edition has therefore become necessary.

While retaining the basic format with which you are familiar,we have made some small changes in layout that we hope will be seen as improvements.

Anecessary change has been to reduce the level of detail of the references to the User Guides. Since sections of the Reference Manual may often have to go to press a long time before corresponding User Guide chapters, detailed references might often prove inaccurate. Each chapter of the User Guides does, however, carry a detailed contents list, where further information may be sought.

ARTEMIS Graphics has now been added to the Reference Manual, which has therefore expanded in size and covers all of the ordinary user's ARTEMIS commands. System Manager's commands are still excluded and there are no plans for adding them to this volume.
