The Internal Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is designed exclusively for use with the PlayStation 2. The HDD was originally released in Japan on July 19th 2001 and later in North America on March 23rd 2004. A network adaptor (sold separately) is required for connection to the PlayStation 2 and to receive power. The HDD has a 40GB capacity that can be used by games to speed up loading times and as a backup for the memory card. There were approximately 145 North American and Japanese game releases that supported the device.

Unofficial software HD Loader allowed users to copy complete games to the HDD allowing them to be played without using the original disk.
