Programming in MIRFAC - Second Edition

MIRFAC stands for  Mathematics in Recognizable Form Automatically Compiled

The programming language MIRFAC has been developed over a period of years on an experimental basis at the Royal Armament Research and Development Establishment at Fort Halstead. It was announced briefly in the Communications of the A.C.M. in September 1963, but has not been publicly described since.

Its central aim is to offer to the general computer public a language which makes it as easy as possible for the non-specialist to present problems to a computer. In support of this aim a special purpose typing machine--costing very little more than the standard product--has been developed.

The language is thus able to accept for compilation any mathematical equation written in standard text-book notation. Those statements in a problem which do not fall into this category--input, output, jumps and the like--are written in 'plain English' forms designed so as to avoid special conventions.
