The C.E. 60 Computer User's Manual was compiled by Freelance Programmers Ltd
Reference:427/30.3.66

The C.E.60 has built-in facilities for only certain basic functions which are described in section 2:- Machine Coding for the C.E.60, To extend the number of functions which the computer can perform, subroutines have been written and these are described in section 2.5

An Assembly program has been written for the C.E.60 so that the calculation to be performed by the computer can be written as a sequence of instructions using the alphabetical or mnemonic code described in section 3. After the mnemonic program has been punched on tape using the International 5 Unit Telegraph Code and the conventions given in section 3, the assembly program is placed in the C.E. 60 and used to translate the mnemonic tape into a machine code tape which also calls in the necessary subroutines for functions other than the basic ones. The subroutines and the basic input instructions are stored permanently in the machine.

The assembly program is held on punched tape; when it is placed in the C.E.60 it occupies the whole of the store. The first stage in running a program is to obtain a machine code tape from the mnemonic tape which is supplied as data. Each input character, or group of characters, is translated and output in turn.

After this translated tape has been obtained, it can be read into the C.E.60. The machine is then ready to operate this program by the basic input instructions.
