The first game establishing the Elder Scrolls series. The Tamriel universe in the game was first created by the developers who previously played role playing games in pen and paper format.

It was rumoured that during development all 'arena combat' had to be cut from the game, but since the print and marketing materials had already been produced featuring the name 'Arena', the creators developed a background story to account for this - that the 'Empire of Tamriel' was so violent, it had been nicknamed the Arena.

The full game was re-released by Bethesda in 2004 as a free download, celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls.
