CBS News uses a UNIVAC computer to predict election

In 1952, US TV network borrowed a UNIVAC computer to predict the result of the 1952 election.

Opinion polls predicted a close race between Republican Dwight Eisenhower and Democrat Adlai Stevenson. However, UNIVAC successfully predicted that that Dwight Eisenhower would win, based on a sample of just 1% of the voting population.

Early in the evening, that prediction was held back from transmission because it seemed so implausible. As more and more results came in though, it became clear that UNIVAC had got it right.
