Introduction of 80-column IBM punch card format

In 1928, IBM introduces a new version of the punched card known as The IBM Card. For the next four decades, this design was the most popular format for storing data and programs, and helped propel IBM to the forefront of the emerging data processing industry.

The newly designed card had rectangular holes and 80 columns, almost doubling the capacity of the previous design.
