Intel announces the first EPROM

Intel introduces the first Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EPROM) technology at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), held between the 17th and 19th of February 1971.

EPROM is a type of programmable memory chip that retains its data when the power is switched off. Once programmed, an EPROM chip can be erased by exposing it to strong ultraviolet light through a transparent window on the top of the package.

EPROM inventor Dov Frohman gave a live demonstration of the new technology at the conference.

The actual product, the 1702, was launched later in the year.
