Following numerous requests both by members and non-members it was decided that the National Computing Centre Limited should issue this essential and widely-used, high level language manual in the United Kingdom. This would not have been possible, however, without the gratefully accepted assistance of the UNVAC Division of Sperry Rand Corporation, who hold the copyright of COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language) and of the "United States Navy Programming Languages Group.

"COBOL" provides the programmer with a machine-independent programming language and ignores the machine-dependent features which can restrict the usefulness of a program to one particular type of machine. Use of this manual should therefore enable -r.e programmer to produce a program which can be successfully applied to any make of machine and avoids the laborious task of program rewrites and the attendant costs involved. This publication provides the essentials of COBOL in a standard manual which has been widely used throughout the United States as an instructional handbook. COBOL brings one close to having computer language tailor-made to one's own needs and it enables identification of the many program elements to be made in rlish and in a readily-understandable form. As discussions in the manual are oriented towards the highest level - level two the fullest implementation can be achieved.

Essentially the manual follows the structure of the COBOL la as defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and describes the nucleus, sequential access, segmentation and library modules as applied to tape, card and printed files. Also included are sections on table handling, sorting, mass storage, random access, and a useful glossary.

In addition to this manual, the Centre also has available a number of valuable support programs. These programs have been prepared b the United States Navy Programming Langauages Group and include compiler auditing routines, preprocessing options and a program flowcharter.
