Primarily this book is intended as an introduction to the principles of the design of computer systems for a college course in computer engineering. In fact the work grew out of a third year course on the digital computer at Chelsea College, and therefore is directed at undergraduate or MSc level. However the author has spent much of his career in industry, both here and in the USA, and writes from a practical as well as an academic viewpoint. It is envisaged therefore, that this book will be as useful to the practising engineer as to the student.
