British Telecom Tandata Terminal

This "Tandata BT terminal" was a prototype Prestel terminal. It was commissioned by BT, along with a number of alternative styles prior to their request for a quotation for 100,000 units. An ex-Bang & Olufsen designer was used to produce a number of styling exercise mock-ups. The model in our collection appears to be the only extant model of the one that was BT's final choice, and which was followed by the request for quotation.

Shortly after the quotation was received, the sub-contract assembly company, AB Microelectronics, made a successful bid for the Tandata business, some of which was transferred to South Wales. Unfortunately, the quotation never resulted in an order, and AB sold off the remains to its management in two separate transactions around two years after the acquisition. Tandata Design Consultants remained in the Old Maltings, on Ditton Walk in Cambridge, and Tandata Systems Ltd, a new company created to continue some of the products of the old firm, moved to Newbury, where it continued until it was sold to ACIS, of Cowley Road, Cambridge.
