SimEarth is a life simulation video game, published in 1990 by Maxis and the second Sim title designed by Will Wright. Versions were made for the Apple Macintosh, Amiga,  SNES, IBM PC, Sega Mega-CD and TurboGrafx-16.

The player controls the development of a planet by varying the planet's atmosphere, temperature, landmasses, etc., then place various forms of life on the planet and watch them evolve. The “Random Planet” game is esentially a software toy without any goals. The real challenge is to evolve sentient life and an advanced civilization. To do this the development stages of the planet can be repeated, until the planet "dies" ten billion years after its creation when the sun becomes a red giant and kills off all life.

English scientist James Lovelock served as an advisor and his Gaia hypothesis of planet evolution was incorporated into the game.
