Mega Drive 3 (Not Sega)

The Mega Drive 3 has nothing to do with the actual Sega range of consoles, but is actually a "console on a chip" manufactured by Lite Star/UMC in 2000.

According to the system itself, and markings on the box, it was manufactured under license from Sega Enterprises Ltd. However, its legitimacy is questionable. Additionally if it is true, it dates the console to 2000 at the latest, as during 2000, Sega Enterprises Ltd became Sega Corporation.

The unit itself is the same shape as the Sega-licensed 'Master System Handy' made by Tectoy in Brazil, just with more buttons. (Tectoy did actually produce a product called the Mega Drive 3, but it does not resemble this one.)

he console doubles up as a controller which can be plugged into a TV.  Rather than having a cartridge slot, it contains 20 built-in Sega Mega Drive games (though in actuality, there are only 8 - the rest are duplicates). The system is sold in a number of colourways, including transparent-green and transparent-purple.

The system is notable for using the same integrated chip used in the Sega Genesis 3 (a 315-6123 ASIC), although whether it is genuine or a clone is uncertain.

Manufacturer: UMC
Date: 2000
