The Control Data Corporation (CDC) 1209 Data Pack consists of three 230 mm (9 inch) oxide-coated rigid disks attached to a hub and encased in a protective plastic housing. Five disk surfaces are used for data storage. One disk surface contains prerecorded servo, index/timing and flaw map information.

The data pack is designed for 10,000 insertion/removal cycles. It is inserted vertically through a door located in the front of the drive. The 1209 Data Pack is suitable for use with the CDC 9710 Removable Storage Drive.

When the data pack is removed from the drive, a spring-loaded head access door closes to seal out contamination. A write-protect tab on the pack prevents accidental erasures. The data pack's plastic housing is treated with an anti-static material during manufacturing.
