Sinclair ZX81 Computer Launched
5th March 1981
The Sinclair ZX81 was launched on the 5th March 1981 as the follow up to Sinclair's ZX80 computer.
The ZX81 was hugely successful and brought computing to the average family with more than 1.5 million units sold.
It could be bought by mail order as a build-it-yourself kit or as a ready to plug-in computer.
The ZX81 was the first cheap mass-market home computer that could be bought from high street stores, led by W.H. Smith and soon many other retailers.
