Texas Instruments invents the pocket calculator

A team led by Jack Kilby, co-inventor of the integrated circuit, built the first hand-held electronic calculator at Texas Instruments.

The project began in September 1965 with the aim of designing a device to replace the the slide rule. The requirements were that the device had buttons, was battery-powered, and had a display mechanism.

On March 29, 1967, 18 months after the project began, the prototype was delivered to TI president Pat Haggerty.

The battery-powered device, called the "Cal-Tech", performed addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Results were output on a built-in thermal printer.
