Blu-ray wins the HD format war

Between 2006 and 2008, there were two competing high-definition optical disc formats both aiming to replace DVD. In 2006, Toshiba launched the HD DVD format, while Sony introduced Blu-ray. This competition between the different formats was known as the HD format war.

The HD format war ended on February 19, 2008 when Toshiba announced that it was stopping the development of HD DVD players, leaving Blu-ray the victor.

Blu-ray was the format used for several games consoles, including the PS3, PS4, and Xbox One.
