Dabbler is natural media drawing software aimed at beginners, developed as a simplified version of Fractal Design's Painter, and included multimedia tutorials and a fullscreen interface.

Mark Zimmer and Tom Hedges, founded  Fractal Design Corporation, they had previously developed ImageStudio and ColorStudio, both image-editing applications, for Letraset. Painter was initially developed for the Apple Macintosh. John Derry, who joined Zimmer and Hedges during the release cycle of Painter 1.2, had gained previous paint software expertise at Time Arts.

Fractal Design merged with RayDream, then with MetaTools to become MetaCreations. Metacreations sold all their creative interests and Painter was acquired by Corel Corporation where it was temporarily rebranded "Procreate" Painter during its transition into the Corel Suite of graphic applications. Painter is now wholly owned and marketed by Corel.

Dabbler was released as "Art Dabbler" after the MetaCreations merger, and rights were eventually transferred to Corel.

Dabbler 2 was described as "The Art Tutor Inside your Computer" the paint program that teaches you how to draw, demonstrating the fundamentals of drawing and animation, while providing a rich environment for art creation. It included two classic Walter Foster Learn to Draw Books - Cartooning with Bruce Blitz and Cartoon Animation by Preston Blair - with digital movies, graphics and visual instructions. You can draw along in Dabbler, while Electronic Tutors take you through step-by-step lessons on drawing fundamentals.

Dabbler's tools and textures respond just like tradtitional art materials. Pencils react to paper textures; felt markers bleed; spray paint spatters; crayons build-up; and your finished art looks like real art - not computer art. Dabbler 2 included the ability to create and play frame-by-frame animations and print animations as flipbooks, or export them as QuickTime or Video for Windows movies. It included 100 high-quality photographs; hundreds of hot stencils; dozens of paper textures and font libraries. The paint program for aspiring artists of all ages.
