Nintendo Release the Super Nintendo in the UK and Ireland
11th April 1992 Nintendo Begin The Release their Second Home Console In Europe
14 Months after the Japanese launch, the Super nintendo is releasd in the UK and the Republic of Ireland on the 11th April 1992. 10.000 machines are sent over, costing £149.99. It was packed with two controllers and a copy of Super Mario World, still regarded as one of the finest platform games ever released, Initially Bandai handled the machine in Europe, until Nintendo established an office in the UK a year later.
Just two other games were released with the console, F-Zero, the futuristic racer, which showed off the new graphics capabilities of the machine, and Super Tennis, an amazing sports title that would take some years to better.
The machine was not expected until much later in the year, but a surprise launch in Canada in November 1991 had signalled the machine was nearing a European release.
The launch weekend was over the Easter period, magazines such as CVG (Computer and Videogames) had been printing regular articles about the machine and games for months.
The console used the Japanese design of the Super Famicom, instead of the widely anticipated US look, which was styled more like the previous console the NES, it was branded the same as the American console.
The console's competitive price and inclusion of Super Mario World, meant the console sold out at launch, but would never catch the Sega Megadrive in sales in the UK or Europe, as it had a huge head start being released at the end of 1990. No other country saw the machine in Europe until the German release in June.
