Sony releases PlayStation 2 in Europe

Sony released the successor to the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2 (PS2) on 24th November 2000 in Europe.

After the huge success of the original PlayStation, anticipation for the new machine was enormous. Despite Sega releasing the Dreamcast a year earlier, Sony were able to persuade most of their users to wait for the PS2 by promising backwards compatibility with the original PlayStation.

Sony's other masterstroke was making the drive in the machine a DVD drive, which was very appealing to the public. For many people, the PS2 was their first DVD player. Combined with the return of familiar franchises like Ridge Racer, the PS2 would become the most successful console of all time.
