Texas Instruments announces Speak & Spell

On 11th June 1978, Texas Instruments unveiled their new product, Speak & Spell, at the summer Consumer Electronics Show held in Chicago. Speak & Spell was a hand-held electonic educational toy that used voice synthesis to help teach language skills.

Speak & Spell used the TMC0280, the first single-chip voice synthesizer.

The four engineers who created the Speak & Spell were Gene Frantz, Richard Wiggins, Paul Breedlove, and George Brantingham.
