Computer pioneer Grace Hopper is born

9th December 1906 Grace Brewster Murray Hopper, an American computer scientist and United States Navy rear admiral, is born in New York City. One of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer, she was a pioneer of computer programming and created the first compiler for a computer programming language. She popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, an early high-level programming language still in use today. While working on the Harvard Mark II, Hopper discovered the first computer bug - a moth - and coined the term to mean a problem with a program. Because of the breadth of her accomplishments and her naval rank, she is sometimes referred to as "Amazing Grace". She died on January 1, 1992. Related information:
