IBM introduces the IBM 5170 PC/AT

The IBM PC/AT was IBM's second generation PC, the successor to the PC and the XT.

Introduced in IBM Announcement Letter Number 184-097 dated 14th August 1984, the IBM PC/AT was basd on a 6 MHz Intel 80286 processor and included a 1.2MB 5.25" floppy drive. The machine also came with an early version of Microsoft Word and a very early Microsoft Mouse.

Two models were available at launch:

  • PC-AT model 1: 256 KB RAM, two floppy disk units and a color screen
  • PC-AT Model 2: 512 KB RAM, one floppy disk unit, one hard disk and a color screen
