Brain, the first PC virus, is released

The first computer virus targeting the IBM Personal Computer (IBM PC) and compatibles is released.

The virus was known as "Brain", and was written by brothers Basit and Amjad Farooq Alvi from Lahore in Pakistan.

Originally intended to protect software from unauthorised piracy, the virus spread by infecting the boot sector of floppy disks, replacing data with text including the phrase "Welcome to the Dungeon".
