Research Comments: W.J. Eckert was Director of Pure Science at IBM and Director of the Watson Scientific Computing Laboratory at Columbia University at the time of this article. The article is about the IBM Selective Sequence Electronic Calculator, an electromechanical computer. The article ends with a summary of the future developments on the horizon at the time, particularly in terms of memory: 'the supersonic delay line' (e.g. mercury delay lines), 'the electrostatic memory device' (cathode ray tube memory) and magnetic drums, tapes and wires.
