UK connects to ARPANET

On 25 July 1973, ARPANET’s first international connection was completed. A computer at University College London (UCL) sent data to another computer in California.

The transatlantic link had several stages, as follows:

  • London to Norway via cable
  • Norway to the Seismic Data Analysis Centre (SDAC) in Virginia via satellite link
  • SDAC to the Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California via the US network
