Great Day at The Wakefield RISC OS Show 2009

The Wakefield RISC OS Show 2009Saturday saw this years Wakefield RISC OS Computer Show and the Centre for Computing History was proud to be part of it.

It was a good day with plenty of visitors through the door and a vibrant atmosphere.

We met loads of interesting people including Chris Whythead who although we have used his site as a point of reference MANY times have never had the opportunity to meet. (nice to meet you Chris!) Checkout http://acorn.chriswhy.co.uk/ for pretty much everything you'll ever need to know about Acorn!!

Had a very interesting chat with Martin Hansen of MathMagical software and his great new program 'Flicker' a RISC OS multi-media desktop sprite animation player. www.mathmagical.co.uk

The guys at NetSurf although ever-so-slightly unhinged were great fun. (Make sure you don't forget to invite us to the Debian bash!!) Their NetSurf application is the web browser of choice for RISC OS users and is free to download from their website : http://www.netsurf-browser.org/ although it was also available to buy from their stand at the show. It was good to see people prepared to pay for good quality software in order to support the continued development.

It was great to see a working Domesday System courtesy of Joel Rowbottom of 8 Bit World. We have in immaculate Domesday System here at the Centre for Computing History which sadly we are unable to tease into life, but hopefully with come very kind help and advice from Joel we may well have only the 5th known working Domesday System in the UK very soon ... fingers crossed!

What were the guys in bondage about ????
I thought I recognised one of them from a special thursday nite club I go to (that IS a joke!) and was very surprised to see that look at the show. It was great though, good to see a bit of 'social diversity' !!! Someone email me and let me know who they were so we can name (and shame?) them :-)

Sadly we didn't get a chance to speak to everyone, but theres always next year ...

We had lots of offers of machines to add to our collection and some offers of contacts for people that might be able to help our project. Please do follow these up - we need your support! - Email us using the link below.

The organisation of the event was first class. Well done to Chris Hughes and the many good people that helped the event run so smoothly.

Finally, thanks to Andy Taylor, one of our dedicated volunteers, who helped man the stand. He bought a GPS device from the charity stand and had to explain his unnecessary buy to his better half when he got home !! He promised it would encourage him to ride his bike more and said he would go for a 5 mile ride on Sunday. Did he? ... doubtful ! :-) Visit his site at : http://retrocomputers.wordpress.com/

See www.wakefieldshow.org.uk for information about next years event and www.wrocc.org.uk for information about the Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club.

It was great to meet you all ...

By the way, we have a number of Acorn Computers. If you have one you'd like to donate or can help us improve the information we have about them, please do email us using the link below.
