People! People! We Need Volunteers
We have an urgent need for people who are happy to help with administrative work, assisting communications, curatorial, events and educational staff in a more behind-the-scenes capacity.
Volunteering can be a great way to build skills and confidence. You don't need specialist knowledge to volunteer; what you will need is enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in!
We also require people who are happy to be helpers/stewards for our galleries. We really need people who are 'people people', who are content to wander our rooms chatting and being helpful to visitors, while also quietly keeping an eye on our retro kit. We love our visitors to interact with our machines but sometimes visitors are wary of touching things (museums aren’t generally as interactive as ours!) or they’re a bit overzealous (nostalgia’s a wonderful thing) and we’d love to have more ‘museum assistant’ types who can encourage everyone to have a go and keep our visitors and our kit safe in doing so. We don’t need geeks for this, just normal people :)
You needn't have a deep knowledge of computing history, just be someone who is happy to chat to make sure our visitors enjoy their time with us and walk away from the museum knowing that we appreciate their visit. If someone asks you a technical question, you can always say 'I don't know but come and speak to XYZ who will know'. We have plenty of technical people on hand. But techies aren’t generally known for being sociable so we desperately need a different type of person altogether. Being at the museum is a relaxed, enjoyable pastime and this particular role is one that benefits the museum greatly.
We are very grateful to all our volunteers, whose vital contributions make a real and valued difference to our work.
