Our SUMR Experience

If you're planning to head over and see us during the summer holidays, you'll find that we're offering something a little different this year. We're in the midst of our exciting new summer festival - SUMR: The Summer of Computer Love.

It provides an opportunity to see aspects of our collection that aren't always on display (digital music, cyber security, codes and cyphers and more), and we're running over 30 special events including interactive workshops, talks and hands-on experiences. It's a hectic time, and there's a real buzz about the museum.

Welcome to our SUMR Guides

As part of SUMR, we've enhanced our visitor experience by introducing our SUMR Guides - a group of talented and outgoing young people, studying in the Cambridge locale - who are on hand to welcome visitors and guide you through the history of computing and the stories of our digital age.

They've spent the last couple of weeks getting acquainted with the Centre and are now a firm part of our team. Not only will you get a chance to meet them on your next visit, but you can read their comments below which gives a brief insight into what this experience means for them.

So in their own words here are Sumaya & Martina...

Summer 2017: The great outdoors, BBQs, holidays and rain!! (Britain, what's good?)

Summer is usually a time for sunbathing, hanging out with friends and relaxing. But instead of venturing into the outside world, us SUMR Guides have been venturing into the world of computing and the history behind it.

We've been exploring not only the technology we use today, in our everyday lives, but also discovering the steps that contributed to the development of what we call technology now.

We're half way through our journey at The Centre for Computing History so far, and already it's reasonable to say that our eyes have been opened to a completely mind boggling world that we would have never experienced without this opportunity. From workshops to casual conversations with visitors, we have been immersed in a culture that thrives on passion, curiosity and imagination.

Our experience has really ignited our interest in the community of computing. From being two sixth-form students studying subjects from two different ends of the spectrum, we were able to easily find our common ground through our mutual desire to not only educate, but also give people the joy to relive their stories and indulge in a little nostalgia.

Overall, committing our six weeks off to helping around the museum has been much less of a task and more of a pleasure.
