Open Days for Teachers

"We recognise that behind every educational visit there is a lot of work planning, organising and delivering the visit on behalf of the students.  This role falls upon teachers and we want to help with that process as much as possible."

Dr Anjali Das,  Head of Learning at The Centre for Computing History

Open Days for Teachers

The Centre for Computing History is committed to the use of the Centre’s computing collection for the benefit of young people.   Thousands of students, together with their teachers,  visit the Centre each year to develop their understanding of the heritage of computing, engage in practical activities and have fun!

Our website tries to convey as much information as possible about an Education group visit to the Centre.  But this cannot be a substitute for a real visit and so the Centre is proud to support teachers by identifying ‘Open Days’ for Teachers.

On each Open Day for Teachers,  the Centre will offer;

  • Free access to UK teachers (plus one adult) from any UK educational establishment,
  • A guided tour of the Centre and details of educational visit programmes,
  • An opportunity to discuss specific requirements with a member of our Learning team,
  • Free time to explore the Centre.

The Open Day visit will enable teachers to develop their own understanding of Computing by exploring its rich heritage and the impact the past has had on the present and future.

After attending an Open Day,  teachers can better understand what their students will experience on a visit and be better prepared to ensure their students maximise the benefit of the time and effort put into an educational visit.

Access to one of the Centre’s Learning team gives the teacher an opportunity to ask the detailed questions and explore ways to personalise their visit to meet specific educational objectives related to their students.

Above all else, it is an opportunity for a teacher to: immerse themselves in the fascinating story of computing, see and touch artefacts, learn new facts that can be taken back into the classroom.

Open Days for Teachers take place in the school breaks in half term and end of term.  They are published in advance on our website. Teachers wishing to take advantage of the Open Days offer must book their visit to help the Centre deploy the appropriate resources.

A visiting teacher can bring with them an accompanying adult who will also receive free entry to the Centre.   A teacher may visit and depart on the Open Day at any time during the Centre’s opening hours for that day, published on the website.  Tours and access to a member of the Learning team may be programmed for certain times during the day depending upon demand.
