Things are tough right now ...

They're tough for everyone :( But when coronavirus hit here in the UK, the museum had to close its doors to the public, and we lost practically all our income overnight.

Please Donate Via Just GivingNo visitors, no workshops, no events, no school visits... no income. We know that things are tough for everyone right now, but if you can afford to help us through these tough times please donate what you can.

Stay safe, stay at home! There's over 36,000 exhibits here! That should keep you occupied for a bit - get searching!

Online Charity Shop Manager

The museum has an online charity shop called GameBytes : which sells donated items that have the permission to be sold on to raise funds for the museum should they not be suitable for our collection.

Most donors want the museum to take everything they have, sort through it, add the items we don't have to the collection, and dispose of any unwanted items. We dispose of unwanted items to other collectors online for the benefit of the museum, in a similar way to the way charity shops work.

*** We are now offering this opportunity as a paid placement at £8ph for 3 days per week. ***

The shop mostly sells duplicate games and software but also sometimes hardware.

We have also recently been trying eBay and had a volunteer who managed the online shop but we require someone to take over and build on the success we have had so far. This will involve photographing and describing the items and packing them ready for dispatch when we make a sale. We offer items at a 99p starting bid so that the community around us can decide its value rather than the museum setting a price.

This role does require that you have some knowledge of computing hardware, video games and software and the ability to research items that you are not familiar with. Much can be researched online, but a personal knowledge would be a huge advantage. You must be able to describe items accurately and fairly, photograph them and upload the images to the website. This is easy to do and we can give you full training. If you have experience buying and selling on eBay then you will have a good grasp of our process too. You may need to clean items to present them in the best way, and to test items as far as possible.

Come and Join the Team!

We have an amazing team of volunteers with a wide range of skills. We are a relaxed and welcoming team. The working atmosphere is fun, relaxed but professional. Tea and coffee is available for free from our 'Pac Lunch Shop' and as a volunteer you are welcome to all of our special events for free.

To be able to do this role you will need to be able to get to the museum in Cambridge.

We are open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, every week throughout the year. We also often meet up on a Thursday evening on a casual basis to get things done and maybe get some pizza in!

This role can be done at a time that suits you within the above times. The amount of time you can offer us is entirely up to you, and it need not be the same each week. All we ask is that you let us know in advance.
