Basic Music Composition

This unique program enables you to compose your own music directly onto the screen, not by using random notes and hoping a tune will emerge, but by choosing melody notes from the harmony. Your composition with full harmonies is played back with a choice of instrumental combinations and tempo.

Every piece you compose will be musically correct, event at your first attempt. As you become more experienced and inventive, your skill as a musician will develop and your compositions will improve.

The program offers a choice of three musical keys and two time signatures. To aid pitch training, the computer plays each melody note as you place it on the stave. If you want to make a change, simply edit the tune as you go along. Once you have written your tune and played it, you can enhance it by adding passing notes and rests.

When you are happy with your composition, you can print it out on a dot matrix printer as sixteen bars of music. You and your friends can then play the music on a variety of instruments such as recorders, pitched percussion instruments, guitars or a piano. You can also save your compositions on disk to build up a library of original music.

The program is an invaluable introduction to learning the fundamentals of composing, even if you already have some musical knowledge. Once you have learnt the skills of composing, you will be able to write your own music away from the computer.

As no specialist knowledge is required of computers or music, the program is ideal for classroom teachers and for pupils working at home.

The program is simple to use and its operation is explained in an informative manual. To extend its capability, the program can be used with the Music 5000 Universal Synthesiser by Hybrid Technology.
