The Sharp EL-8130 calculator, which was introduced in 1977, was the first touch key calculator using a membrane keypad. Along with its eight-digit LCD screen, this allowed the calculator to be very thin and flat, measuring only 5mm thick. As a result of the lack of tactile response when pressing the keys, there was a setting that made the buttons beep when pressed so that the user knew it had been registered.

The calculator had additional memory, percentage, and square root functions on top of the standard four-function calculator. It was powered by two SR1130 batteries.
