The Xerox 610 Memorywriter was a word orocessor / electric typewriter released in the early 1980s.  The manual covers Communications, a specific part of its functionality.

From the introduction:

'Communications is the optional feature on your Memorywriter which provides you with the ability to "talk" to another Memorywriter, a communicating device or host computer.

Communication is simply the ability to send (transmit) or receive information from one device to another. The devices may be right around the corner from one another or many miles apart.  Typically, communication takes place over the same telephone lines that youuse for conversation. These telephone lines are referred to as "voice grade". A modem is used to connect the Memorywriter to the telephone line. The modem converts the information into signals that are sent over the phone to the other device.'
