Texas Instruments releases the TI99/4A

On the 31st May 1981, Texas Instruments launched the TI99/4A at the summer Consumer Electronics Show held in Chicago.

The TI99/4A was an upgraded version of the original TI99/4, featuring an updated keyboard and TMS9918A video chip. The TI99/4 and the TI99/4A were the first 16-bit home computers.

The TI99/4A was one of the first 16-bit home computers, using a 16-bit TMS9900 CPU running at 3MHZ. However, technological constraints prevented most operations from using the 16-bit data bus, hampering access to memory and peripherals. These operations had to use a 16-to-8-bit multiplexer, crippling performance.

The TI99/4A went on to be produced up until March 1984.
