Tom Coventry: Life with the LEOs

Tom Coventry joined Shell-Mex and BP as a trainee operator in Hemel Hempstead in 1967.  His experiences as an operator are narrated in his reminiscences.

Abstract: After just over a year in operating Tom transferred to programming and was involved in a variety of projects including the transfer of  the LEO systems to the UNIVAC Unysis system.  On the splitting of Shell-Mex and BP into its component companies he opted to join the Shell team in Wythenshaw.  He was appointed team leader in 1985.  In 1999 he was offered early retirement on very good terms and after some hesitation thought the terms too good to miss and retired in May 2000 after a computing career of 33 years.  In 1974 he married a fellow programmer at Shell-Mex and BP.
