Cambridge Computer Science Texts - 4

Processing non-numerical information is a highly important aspect of computer science. Macro processors, several of which have been developed over the past ten or fifteen years, convert text from one form to another. Used simply a macro processor can act as a text editor, while in a more complex application it can even be regarded as an alternative to a compiler.

This book discusses the purpose of various available macro processors, and concentrates on their internal structure rather than detailed instructions for their use. Descriptions are given of various types of macro processors and their application to processing assembly language and text strings, to a mobile programming system, to compiler bootstrapping and to extensible compilers. Illustrative statements in many well-known macro-languages abound throughout the book and most chapters end with examples.
