This text introduces students - slowly, carefully and in a step-by-step fashion - to the use of data-structuring techniques in the design and implementation of large programming projects. The author combines a conceptual approach with practical programming assignments using the notion of the abstract data type as the key design principle. After reading Reynolds' book, students will be able to think about data types as abstract objects, develop new conceptual skills to visualize larger programs (especially ones managing complex data structures) and develop good programming habits. Included in this text are numerous large programming projects and every chapter contains a major project; each is thoroughly described, a top-down design is discussed, and the procedure/function of the ultimate Pascal program is explained. Numerous examples and illustrations help students understand difficult concepts. This book should be of interest to degree and diploma students on introductory courses in program design using Pascal.

68000 Pocketbook is a book written by K.D.Peel.
familiar with An Introduction to Microcomputers: Volume 1 — Basic Concepts (Berkeley: Osborne/McGraw-Hill, 1980). Chapters 6 and 7 of that book are
especially relevant. This book does not discuss the general features of computers,
microcomputers, addressing methods, or instruction sets; you should refer to An
Introduction to Microcomputers: Volume 1 for that information.
The chapters in this section provide basic information on assembly language in
general and the 6809 in particular. Chapter 1 discusses the purpose of assembly
language and compares it with higher-level computer languages. Chapter 2 discusses assemblers and, briefly, loaders. Chapter 3 describes the architecture of the 6809 microprocessor, compares it with similar processors, and discusses important features of Motorola's 6809 assemblers.

Lisp (or LISP) is a family of computer programming languages with a long history and a distinctive, fully parenthesized syntax. Originally specified in 1958, Lisp is the second-oldest high-level programming language in widespread use today; only Fortran is older (by one year). Like Fortran, Lisp has changed a great deal since its early days, and a number of dialects have existed over its history

The original copy of P. F. Blackman's 1956 thesis, submitted for the Degree of Ph.D. in Engineering of London University.
This bound book is hand-typed, with hand-drawn diagrams, and black-and-white photographs pasted in. A copy of the thesis summary is provided below:
"Certain important aspects of closed-loop system and network analysis are closely related to complex variable mathematics. Graphical interpretation of such analysis is frequently employed owing to the difficulty of exact analytic work. In particular the 'p-plane' or 'root-locus' method is essentially simple, and affords considerable insight into the problem, but becomes tedious in practice for complicated systems, and several instruments have been devised to reduce the labour.
"It seemed to the author that the application of p-plane principles could be considerably extended if certain operations beyond the scope of existing instruments, particularly manipulation of ept, and summation of real and imaginary components of vector products, could be achieved. These facilities would enable more advanced types of problems to be handled, such as systems containing a pure delay, and transient response by contour integration, and would permit investigation of problems not previously considered.
"This Thesis gives proposals for a Computor to provide these additional facilities. In principle the proposals are that the techniques should be as simple as possible compatible with accuracy to engineering requirements, while facilities provided should be just adequate to eliminate excessive labour from investigations. This leads to a suggested combination of analogue and digital principles.
"An experimental Computor developed from these proposals is described. Vectors are represented by AC voltages, final results being presented as counts on Dekatrons. The Computor is largely relay controlled, and accuracy is of the order 1%-2%.
"The thesis contains 3 sections:-
"Section 1. Outlines the p-plane method, and gives proposals for the Computor. The design of a proposed resistance network analogue of the complex plane is dicussed.
"Section 2. Describes the experimental Computor, and the essential points of interest in the analogue to digital conversion processes. The operation of individual units is outlined, more detailed information being given in an appendix.
"Section 3. Illustrates the varied type of problem that can be handled on the Computor, including some exaples involving time-varying zeros. Alternative applications for the Computor, and modifications resulting from operating experience are discussed."

From the Publisher:
The first book written and edited by the people who developed the Internet, this book deals with the history of creating universal protocols and a global data transfer network. The result is THE authoritative source on the topic, providing a vast amount of insider knowledge unavailable elsewhere. Despite the huge number of contributors, the text is uniform in style and level, and of interest to every scientist and a must-have for all network developers as well as agencies dealing with the Net.

A newcomer to electronics tends to be overwhelmed when first confronted with articles or books on microprocessors. The problems encountered generally fall into three categories:
- Firstly, we have a vast amount of new terminology and it is a sad fact of life that most books or articles assume the reader is familiar with this jargon.
- Secondly, there is an understandable impression of being filled with information from a hose pipe with the effect that the reader is able to understand little bits of technology but is unable to stand back and appreciate the whole picture.
- Finally, a lot of microprocessor logic appears to be terribly arbitrary.

The Pick operating system (often called just "the Pick system" or simply "Pick") is a demand-paged, multiuser, virtual memory, time-sharing operating system based around a unique "multivalued" database. It is used primarily for business data processing. Although it started on a variety of minicomputers, the system and various implementations eventually spread to a large variety of microcomputers and mainframe computers, and is still in use today.
The Pick database is a 'hash-file' data management system. A hash-file system is a collection of dynamic associative arrays which are organized altogether and linked and controlled using associative files as a database management system. Being hash-file oriented, Pick provides efficiency in data access time in many cases. All data structures in Pick are hash-files (at the lowest level) meaning records are stored as associated couplets of a primary key to a set of values.
Pick was originally implemented as the Generalized Information Retrieval Language System (GIRLS) on an IBM System/360 in 1965 by Don Nelson and Dick Pick at TRW for use by the U.S. Army to control the inventory of Cheyenne helicopter parts. Pick was subsequently commercially released in 1973 by Microdata (and their British distributor CMC) as the Reality Operating System now supplied by Northgate Information Solutions.

There is an increasing trend towards parallel computing both in business and in the scientific and engineering fields. Occam is rapidly being seen as an effective solution to the problem of programming concurrent systems of all kinds, and as a powerful tool for describing convurrent algorithms.
The aim of the book is to introduce the reader to concurrent programming using the occam language. Ir provides examples of occam programming and discusses the novel concepts which occam employes. The second half of the book provides a formal description of the occam language.
The authors:
Dick Pountain is UK Contributing Editor to BYTE magazine. he is ex-Managing Director of Personal Computer World and Soft magazines. he is the author of a previous book on object-oriented programming in FORTH.
David May is Transputer architecture manager at INMOS Bristol Microprocessor Development Centre, UK. He has been responsible for designing occam and developing the Transputer architecture.

Accidental Empires: How the Boys of Silicon Valley Make Their Millions, Battle Foreign Competition and Still Can't Get a Date
Amazon.co.uk Review
Robert X. Cringely manages to capture the contradictions and everyday insanity of computer industry empire building, while at the same time chipping away sardonically at the PR campaigns that have built up some very common business people into the household gods of geekdom. Despite some chuckles at the expense of all things nerdy, white and male in the computer industry, Cringely somehow manages to balance the humour with a genuine appreciation of both the technical and strategic accomplishments of these industry luminaries. Whether you're a hard-boiled Silicon Valley marketing exec fishing for an IPO or just a plain old reader with an interest in business history and anecdotal storytelling, there's something to enjoy here.
In his new conclusion, Cringely looks at the likely near-future of the PC industry, arguing that most of the major companies are facing a need to dramatically reformulate their mission in the light of engineering developments already in the works. He offers a new paradigm for the development of the industry as it moves from its early "start up" phase into a more mature, more competitive era. --Jake Bond

This book is a comprehensive guide to programming the Electron. An insight into all the areas of coding is provided by covering Input/ Output, Variables and Constants, Memory, Loops, Sorting and Searching- in detail. The book takes you on a logical route through the five recognised stages of programming: establishment of the OBJECTIVE, DEVELOPMENT, CODING, TESTING, and DOCUMENTATION. Time spent on proper establishment of the OBJECTIVE and DEVELOPMENT will pay for itself tenfold in terms of time wasted on TESTING (debugging) a program written straight into code.

AIX for Breakfast: A Guide for Programmers and System Administrators: Phillip Houtz
ISBN: 0133996840 / 0-13-399684-0
by Phillip Hout
Prentice-Hall 1996
Editorial Reviews:
Synopsis: IBM's AIX is no longer just another flavor of UNIX. With the advent of the POWER PC architecture, IBM RISC computers are finding their way into most organizations. Most of these use AIX for their operating system. This means a lot of people have suddenly become AIX system administrators. Whether your background is UNIX, DOS, or something else, AIX for Breakfast provides everything you'll need to know to handle AIX system administration and programming. By orienting you to the AIX paradigm first, you'll learn from the inside out, focusing on two major areas: customization and system configuration. You'll start by setting up user accounts and shells, then learn to tailor them to individual needs. Choose a GUI interface; learn to customize X Windows, Motif, and X Desktop to fine tune your GUI. Explanations, examples, and diskette samples will take you from the initial file manipulations needed for any user up to complete customization of your organization's working environment.
As you proceed, you'll learn tips for AIX's InfoExplorer to find advanced help and resolve error messages. AIX's most innovative feature is the System Management Interface Tool (SMIT). AIX for Breakfast examines the SMIT menu items one by one, with many tips and insights along the way. SMIT can make software installation a snap. You can also add and configure peripheral devices, both physical and virtual, easily. A special chapter is devoted to the configuration of "unsupported" or third-party printers. You'll even be able to explore the Internet. Using SMIT to configure network services, like TCP/IP, will get you out surfing the Internet in no time. SMIT also helps with error reporting, performance tuning, and maintenance of system parameters.
File management is covered in the chapter devoted to LVM, the Logical Volume Manager. AIX for Breakfast presents a full discussion of partitions, storage, disk mirroring, and backup and recovery. This includes a detailed description of creating bootable backups and operating system re-installation. For administrators who must convert from AIX version 3.2 to AIX 4.1, or who must administer both, an entire chapter documents the changes brought by AIX 4. The enclosed diskette offers practical sample user file customizations, sample scripts, and performance monitoring software.

In this rapid course of programming in the scientific language ALGOL, the emphasis is on early program writing. This book is intended to show you how to develop serious applications programs for use on your Amstrad CPC 464 or 664. David Lawrence emphasises throughout the importance of good program planning and design, and illustrates the principal points with a host of examples.
The book begins with a look at the advantages of modular programming, which makes subsequent checking and debugging on your routines much easier. There follow chapters of debugging, proper methods of inputting information, string handling techniques, error trapping, storage and retrieval, data structures, sorting and searching.
At each stage there are handy hints and tips which suggest new ways of tackling problems - how to save greater volumes of data in your Amstrad's memory, or how to sort a long list of items efficiently. These make the book a handy ready reference to have available whenever you are tackling a new and potentially difficult program.

Hamish Carmichael has had a very happy thought in taking the initiative to collect anecdotes and recollections from the people of ICL, and so to edit and produce this Anthology.
Those of us who were and who still are privileged to work in the most exciting and significant industry so far created by the human race will recall that our colleagues came together from BTM, Powers Samas, and the computer activities of GEC, EMI, Ferranti, English Electric, LEO, Elliotts, Singer and other companies. The strategy of consolidating all the parts making up ICT was the work of Cecil Mead. The creation of ICL was - I suppose fairly - the desire of Harold Wilson’s government. - Arthur Humphreys.
Chapter 6 presents an anthology of quotations about LEO, mainly from LEO Computers personnel.

- In essence, machine code programming is direct programming of the microprocessor without using a built-in high-level computer language such as BASIC.
- The vast increase in running speed obtained when writing programs in machine code is offset, to a degree, by the added complexity in writing them. However, it is not as difficult as one might think and this book tells the story.
- The 6502 microprocessor is utilised in many popular home computers including the Electron, BBC models A and B, VIC-20, ORIC-1/ Atmos and the Atari machines. Also, the Commodore 64 uses the 6510 which is a slightly modified but software compatible version of the 6502.
- Some simple demonstration programs which can be run on a number of the above machines are included in this book.

Amazon Review:
This is a very interesting book for anyone who is involved in today's world of IT but has been around to remember the days before PC's and Microsoft - back when computers were big mysterious devices most of us never saw and certainly didn't work with. The author begins the book with a discussion of just what is an 'automatic computer', what it can do, and how it can be of use to a company.
The computing industry was so small and limited at the time of this book's writing that a huge amount of the computer industry can be well-covered by it. It is hard to describe this book but it deals with everything from application to hardware to programming. It gives detailed specs for the various computers available at the time, right down to the address and phone number of the vendor. It tells whether each can be bought or leased, the physical specs of size and weight, the spare parts list, power requirements, and the amount of time it takes to get it in place and installed. The book covers operating systems, data storage, input and output devices. It tells how to introduce a computer into your company and to deal with the human fallout, how to shift people around in their jobs and keep their support. There are some photographs of vintage equipment and work areas which are really neat too.

"The aim of this book is to teach you to program the Amstrad PC1512 and PC1640 computers in Locomotive BASIC 2. It assumes no prior knowledge of computers or programming, and it is hoped it will show that BASIC programming is not nearly as difficult as it might appear at first sight, and can be both interesting and enjoyable."

"This introduction to computer graphics is an adaptation of 'Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice, second edition', which remains the most comprehensive and authorative work in the field. While retaining the currency and accuracy of the larger book, this abbreviated version focuses on topics essential for all beginners in computer graphics and provides expanded explanations for readers with less technical background. Worked examples have been added to illustrate concepts and techniques, and program code has been written in the C code to enhance the books usefulness."

Amazon Review:
There are some good things to say about this book. It's written in clear, plain language, with helpful illustrations and code examples. Key terms are highlighted and defined concisely.
Unfortunately there are many more bad things to say about it.
Let's face it, this subject is about as exciting as counting freckles. The baroque ugliness of the book's design, intended to suggest in appearance an old notebook of Leonardo da Vinci, has already been mentioned by other reviewers. It certainly doesn't make reading easier.
The authors have tried to liven things up by including anecdotes, biographical sketches, mini-case studies, and other sidebar material. It's a good-hearted but wrong-headed effort. None of this material is necessary, and it only serves to make a long story longer. The book is over 1200 pages long. The last thing a college student needs in his backpack is more weight to carry around all day. And who's actually going to read this stuff? (Hmm, let's see... what to do with my study time? fix my data structures code? perpare for my Calc exam? no, I think I'll read some speculation about the origin of the word "glitch".)
It isn't just the sidebar fluff that pads the book's length. A typical chapter finishes up with a two-page summary, four pages of glossary (unnecessary if you've read the chapter, where the terms are already defined and set in colored type), four pages of exercises , and four pages of bibliography. Yes, a bibliography is appended to each chapter. I am not talking a simple "suggested for further reading". I am talking works cited, 100 or more per chapter. In one case the bib is 13 pages long, with over 400 citations. Who is this for? How many undergraduate students are going to pursue these references?
The makers of this book have employed some crafty strategies to pad their work. Likely to go unnoticed is the redundant fifty-page glossary at the very end of the book, in case you missed the ones at the end of each chapter. The book's table of contents is unnecessarily detailed, with an entry for chapter headings, subdivisions, sub-subdivisions, as well as each sidebar. Next comes a list of every illustration and code example. In case you need to find one fast, or something. There follows a twenty-page preface which details the book's features, and includes a "Tour of the Book", an overview of the eight parts and 21 chapters of the book. The book's actual text doesn't get started until 66 pages in.
I'm guessing this sort of content goes over well with textbook committees, because it means they don't have to read the book to get a sense of its content. I can imagine no other reason to include it unless it is to drive up the price of the book.

In this book, programming is taken one step at a time, with many examples being used to demonstrate not just what various instructions and functions do, but just as importantly, how they can be applied in practice. In this way the reader can, with reasonable ease, gain a practical understanding of most aspects of BASIC programming on the Electron.

Learning to effectively use a powerful computer languages such as the BASIC used by the Commodore C16 and Plus 4 is not the easiest of tasks, but on the other hand, it is not as difficult as one might expect. It is largely a matter of taking the various BASIC instructions and functions one at a time, understanding exactly what each one does and then how one can utilise them in a logical manner in programs of increasing complexity.

Apple Graphics and Arcade Game Design for Apple II.
A programmer's ability to create Apple graphics can be compared to an artist’s ability with a sketchpad or an animator’s skill with animation. Each in their own way creates images that are in some way entertaining. The viewer, however, is only interested in the final effect, not the tedious technical process that the artist or programmer had to apply to produce that effect. The Apple II is a wonderful graphics tool, but unfortunately highly complex to use at any level other than Applesoft BASIC. The scattered magazine articles covering Apple graphics have shown the machine’s complexity without
presenting an adequate solution to the problem of graphics programming concepts. Those who understand the process and have mastered it are too busy writing programs to share their knowledge.
Magical references like “Raster Graphics” and “Bit Mapping” are spoken of as if they are secret techniques practiced only by the top programmers. Their games, such as “Raster Blaster”, “Galaxian”, “Sneakers”, and “PacMan” have both awed wishful game designers and shown them the limitations of their own programming techniques.
This book will allow you to enter the world of Apple graphics, in which your most imaginative ideas can be animated. The various chapters will attempt to present a comprehensive course in Hi-Res graphics and high speed arcade animation. The major part of this material requires the ability to do assembly language programming.

Apple Interfacing for Apple II.
The purpose in writing this book is to introduce you to the signals within the Apple II computer and to show you how these signals can be used to control external devices under the control of BASIC language programs. A general-purpose computer interface breadboard has been developed to speed your circuit design and testing so that you can easily perform the many interesting experiments that are included in the book. By using a design system such as the one
described in this book, you will spend your time concentrating on the ·principles involved, rather than troubleshooting your circuits.
However, you will have the opportunity to build and test many digital circuits, as well as circuits that use digital-to-analog and analog to-digital converters.
We have chosen to use the Apple II computer with 16K of read/write memory, and the Applesoft BASIC interpreter program. This software provides a great deal of flexibility and it is worth having it available when you are using external interface circuits. The Applesoft BASIC interpreter has two general-purpose commands that can be used to transfer information to and from the computer. These instructions are easily mastered, without requiring a detailed
understanding of the 6502 microprocessor integrated circuit (IC) that is used as the "heart" of the Apple II.

With the introduction of the second generation of Apple® Macintosh® computers, the Macintosh SE and the Macintosh II, Apple has broadened the definition of the Macintosh system with two open machines. These machines add significant new capabilities to the Macintosh family, at the same time fitting well within the flexible Macintosh software architecture. This book describes that software architecture, as well as the hardware architectures of the various Macintosh machines.
About this book
Technical Introduction to the Macintosh Family introduces the hardware and software design of the Macintosh family of computers and serves as a starting point to the Macintosh technical documentation. The discussion is primarily oriented toward the Macintosh Plus, Macintosh SE, and Macintosh II computers, but it also touches on earlier versions of the Macintosh where these differ from the Macintosh Plus. The information in this book can provide a starting point for programmers, particularly those who are new to the Macintosh. This book can also serve as a stand-alone handbook for technically minded users and system administrators.
Note that this book will not tell you how to write a Macintosh application. That task is undertaken by a second short volume, Programmer's Introduction to the Macintosh Family.
In describing the architecture of the Macintosh system, this book follows an "outside-in" plan, beginning with the parts of the system seen by the user and proceeding to the lower-level details of the Operating System and the hardware:
o Chapters 1 and 2 introduce the basic pieces of the system hardware and software.
o Chapter 3 describes the graphical, window-based interface that the Macintosh presents to the user, beginning with a discussion of how mouse and keyboard actions are interpreted.
o Chapter 4 expands upon the discussion of this interface by describing resources, specially formatted chunks of data that are used to store user interface elements such as menus, windows, and icons.
o Chapters 5 through 8 describe other elements of the Macintosh software-graphics, the Macintosh Finder and system software, the Macintosh's use of memory, and files.
o Chapter 9 finishes the discussion of the Macintosh software by describing the low-level stuff of the Macintosh Operating System: the managers and device drivers that talk directly to the computer's hardware.
o Chapter 10 describes the hardware itself, contrasting the Macintosh Plus, the Macintosh SE, and the Macintosh IL
o Chapter 11 concludes the book by outlining the A!UX® operating system, Apple's implementation of the AT&T UNIX® Operating System for the Macintosh IL
This book surveys only the surface of the Macintosh hardware and software. If this book were presented interactively, as a piece of Macintosh software, it would represent no more than the Macintosh desktop, where each item could be doubleclicked to reveal many deeper levels of information. You can find these deeper levels of information in the other volumes of the Inside Macintosh Library.

AppleScript The Missing Manual for the Apple Macintosh is a book written by Adam Goldstein and published by O'Reilly Media in 2005.
Mac users around the world use AppleScript to automate their daily computing routines. Famed for its similarity to English and its ease of integration with other programs, AppleScript is the perfect programming language for time-squeezed Mac fans. As beginners quickly realize, however, AppleScript has one major shortcoming: it comes without a manual. No more. You don't need a degree in computer science, a fancy system administrator title, or even a pocket protector and pair of nerdy glasses to learn the Mac's most popular scripting language; you just need the proper guide at your side. AppleScript: The Missing Manual is that guide.Brilliantly compiled by author Adam Goldstein, AppleScript: The Missing Manual is brimming with useful examples. You'll learn how to clean up your Desktop with a single click, for example, and how to automatically optimize pictures for a website. Along the way, you'll learn the overall grammar of AppleScript, so you can write your own customized scripts when you feel the need. Naturally, AppleScript: The Missing Manual isn't merely for the uninitiated scripter. While its hands-on approach certainly keeps novices from feeling intimidated, this comprehensive guide is also suited for system administrators, web and graphics professionals, musicians, scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and others who need to learn the ins and outs of AppleScript for their daily work. Thanks to AppleScript: The Missing Manual, the path from consumer to seasoned script has never been clearer. Now you, too, can automate your Macintosh in no time.

Preface for Second Edition:
Programming is detailed, exacting, and thought provoking. Do not expect to become an expert overnight. Some advertisements may lead you to believe that there is nothing to it. This is simply not true. Programming takes effort that many people are not willing or able to expend. Furthermore, because a program written for one brand of computer will probably not run on a different brand of computer you must not only understand the programming language, but the design of the computer as well. You see, many programming language details and functions are applicable only to a
specific brand of computer. In programming, every character, item, formula, punctuation, and format means something specific to the computer. Exact steps must be programmed for each action the computer takes. Any step not correctly programmed, or improperly placed within the program, will cause the program to fail. This failure may be partial or total, but the program will not produce the desired results. Rote memorization will aid in programming, but comprehensive understanding of how the rules interact and relate will produce more efficient programs.
Programming is the truest form of building on a foundation. A solid foundation must be in place to begin the building process. The computer is an inanimate object that is designed according to a set of specifications.
The machine does not know anything, nor does it assume anything. The computer does exactly what it is told to do. The programmer must understand machine capabilities and apply proper programming rules to produce correct results.
The lessons in this book are designed to present programming rules in a logical, detailed, progressive method from a beginners level to an advanced level. The lessons attempt to always establish a reference point. If you have trouble with programming errors, you can always return to the last reference point to attempt to understand the correct procedure.

For really fast-running programs, as required for games, moving graphics and word processing, your program needs to be in assembly language which runs much faster than BASIC. Unfortunately, the Sinclair ZX81 does not allow you to enter assembly language programs directly, so while you can write assembly language programs for it, they have to be translated into machine code before they will run on the machine.

Although the BASIC language provided on the Amstrad machines is of an exceptionally high standard, there are obvious advantages, both in speed and memory economy, to be gained by the addition of machine code subroutines.
This book is intended to provide a grounding in Amstrad machine code programming. Although particular emphasis is given to the more commonly used Z80 instructions, the full instruction set is presented in an appendix, specially designed for quick reference.
The text is supplemented by numerous practical examples including several full length listings. These are laid out in standard assembly format, but a BASIC program is provided for direct loading of machine code bytes to help those readers who have not yet obtained an assembler.

Introduction
One often gets the impression that programming in assembly language is some very difficult and obscure technique used only by those advanced programmers. As it happens, assembly language is merely different, and if you have successfully used Integer or Applesoft Basic to do some programming, there's no reason why you can't use assembly language to your advantage in your own programs.
This book will take a rather unorthodox approach to explaining assembly programming. Because you are presumably somewhat familiar with Basic, we will draw many parallels between various assembly language techniques and their Basic counterparts. An important factor in learning anything new is a familiar framework in which to fit the new information. Your knowledge of Basic will provide that framework.

This is a book for the amateur astronomer who wishes to carry out astronomical calculations using a personal computer with the minimum of fuss. It is not specific to any make of machine, neither are the programmes confined to specific calculations, Rather, it presents a collection of twenty-six subroutines, written in a portable version of BASIC, which can be mixed and matched according to personal requirements. Furthermore, the user need only have a broad understanding of the problem; the subroutines themselves take care of the details. For example, the routines can be used to calculate the time of rising of any of the planets in any part of the world at any time in the future or past; or they may be used to find the circumstances of the next solar eclipse visible from a particular place. Almost every problem likely to be encountered by the amateur astronomer can be solved by a suitable combination of the routines given here.

Basic BASIC: An Introduction to Programming
Computer programming is something that nearly everyone can do, and many people are finding this out using BASIC, the programming language designed to help them learn. This short text gives priority to two objectives which will greatly aid the learning process. First, the book is fully structured, with an introduction, 14 learning units and a summary of basic BASIC. Second, the level of problems and examples is neither so banal as to insult the intelligence of the reader, nor so advanced as to bewilder him.

We wrote this book with two principal goals in mind. First, we felt it important to present the elements of BASIC so that meaningful computer programs could be written at the earliest possible time. We adhere to the notion that one learns by doing. As a result, problem solving is emphasized from the beginning, and the various aspects of the BASIC language are introduced only as needed. Our second goal was to write a book that would serve as a general introduction to computer programming, not just to a programming language. Simply describing a variety of computer applications and ways to go about writing BASIC programs for these applications does not constitute an introduction to programming. What is required is a consideration of the entire programming process. The approach we have taken toward this objective is to introduce programming principles only as they can be understood and appreciated in the context of the applications being considered. For example, a beginner can easily appreciate the necessity of choosing variable names and determining how they are related. Hence, this step is introduced very early, even though it will later be found that this is one of the last steps normally taken by a programmer. On the other hand, the value of modularization is not so easily grasped in the context of the straightforward programming problems first encountered. As natural as modularization may appear to an experienced programmer, a beginner must "see" its usefulness before being convinced of its value. Therefore, this programming principle is not introduced until much later in the book.
Throughout the text we have attempted to conform to the most common BASIC usage. BASIC is not a static language. It seems that each new BASIC implementation contains what the designers consider to be "improvements." Although the many forms that BASIC assumes on different systems may please Proteus, they do nothing for the poor programmer. To help resolve this dilemma, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) prepared a document, dated December 1, 1976, entitled "Proposed American National Standard for Minimal BASIC." In all but two instances, which are clearly identified, our presentation of minimal BASIC conforms to the ANSI standard.

Amazon.co.uk Review
So where do you want to go tomorrow? That's the question Bill Gates tries to answer in Business @ the Speed of Thought. Gates offers a 12-step programme for companies wanting to do business in the next millennium. The book's premise: Thanks to technology, the speed of business is accelerating at an ever-increasing rate and to survive, it must develop an infrastructure--a "digital nervous system"--that allows for the unfettered movement of information inside a company. Gates writes: "The most meaningful way to differentiate your company from your competition ... is to do an outstanding job with information. How you gather, manage and use information will determine whether you win or lose."
The book is peppered with examples of companies that have already successfully engineered information networks to manage inventory, sales, and customer relationships better. The examples run from Coca-Cola's ability to download sales data from vending machines to Microsoft's own internal practices, such as its reliance on e-mail for company-wide communication and the conversion of most paper processes to digital ones (an assertion that seems somewhat at odds with the now-infamous "by hand on sheets of paper" method of tracking profits that was revealed during Microsoft's antitrust trial).
Product Description
Most companies have a sizeable investment in technology but are realising only 20% of its potential benefit. BUSINESS @ THE SPEED OF THOUGHT introduces the concept of the digital nervous system which unites all systems and processes under one common infrastructure, allowing companies to make quantum leaps in efficiency, growth and profit. Using detailed tours of Microsoft and other major corporations, Gates demonstrates how integrated technology can transform any business by energizing its three major elements: customer/partner relationships, employees and process, and offers practical suggestions on how this can be achieved.

COBOL is one of the oldest programming languages. Its name is an acronym for Common Business-Oriented Language, defining its primary domain in business, finance, and administrative systems for companies and governments.
The COBOL specification was created by a committee of researchers from private industry, universities, and government during the second half of 1959. The specifications were to a great extent inspired by the FLOW-MATIC language invented by Grace Hopper - commonly referred to as "the mother of the COBOL language." The IBM COMTRAN language invented by Bob Bemer was also drawn upon, but the FACT language specification from Honeywell was not distributed to committee members until late in the process and had relatively little impact. FLOW-MATIC's status as the only language of the bunch to have actually been implemented made it particularly attractive to the committee.

This book is not for the absolute beginner. It will not tell you how to plug in your Commodore 128 and switch it on. Neither will it tell you how to write programs that shoot small green furry creatures from the Crab Nebula.
In the Commodore 128 Companion, I have set out to describe the machine from the point of view of the programmer. Each of the commands in the BASIC 7.0 and 2.0 language has a page devoted to it, describing the command syntax, and giving an insight into how the computer processes the command.

This introduction to compilers is the direct descendant of the well-known book by Aho and Ullman, Principles of Compiler Design. The authors present updated coverage of compilers based on research and techniques that have been developed in the field over the past few years. The book provides a thorough introduction to compiler design and covers topics such as context-free grammars, fine state machines, and syntax-directed translation
Amazon Review:
During each compiler stage (lexical analysis, syntax analysis, translation, type checking, translation, code generation, and code optimization) multiple methods, strategies, and algorithms are presented. This comprehensive book examines items that are unique to the various languages presented (Fortran, C, and Pascal); there are even sections on dealing with estimation of types (10.12) and symbolic debugging of optimized code (10.13). Wow! The exercises are thorough, challenging, and thought provoking. Examples are interleaved with the discussion and algorithms. There is an excellent set of historical and bibliographic information at the end of each chapter. The use of automated tools such as lex, yacc, and compiler-generators is discussed throughout the text. This is an advanced book, however a good understanding of compilers can be obtained without understanding the details of every algorithm.

"The exploitation of parallel processing to improve computing speeds is being examined at virtually all levels of computer science, from the study of parallel algorithms to the development of micro-architectures which employ multiple functional units. The most visible aspect of this interest in parallel processing is the commercially available multiprocessor systems which have appeared in the past decade. Unfortunately, the lack of adequate software support for the development of scientific applications that will run efficiently on multiple processors has stunted the acceptance of such systems."

Computer Basics is the final culmination of a comprehensive course originally prepared for the US Navy at a cost of over $250,000 (quite a sum in the 60s). The course was designed to train naval electronics technicians. Written to be easily understood, and with a special chapter by G Oliver for the English reader, it assumes no prior knowledge of computer systems, though it does require some background in basic electronics theory and a working knowledge of trigonometry and algebra. A real slice of technological history.

Amazon Review:
It's amazing how much this book manages to pack into its three-hundred-odd pages, yet it is definitely showing its age.
Most of the 'real world' examples - systems "capable of between one and ten million operations per second" and their software - date to the late 1970s or early 1980s. Digital logic is covered and a simple microprogrammed CPU is worked through as a (good) example but it neglects the fact that, in the last fifteen years, CPU architectures have moved completely away from microcode, passing through RISC and onwards to VLIW. There is obviously no mention of the modern internet as the book pre-dates the WWW. GUIs - or, in fact, any user interfaces less complex than SQL - are another notable omission.
The fundamentals of algorithms and CS are, of course, timeless and this book is an average - though highly compact - introduction to the subject. For those with more time available, I'd recommend 'Foundations of Computer Science' by Aho/Ullman and Knuth's 'The Art of Computer Programming' contains far more detailed coverage of algorithms. Of course, no matter what you choose, this book will still be required reading for the CompSci course at Cambridge...
