The Hobbit is a “floppy tape” storage unit designed to provide program and data storage with some of the functionality of disks, but at a lower cost.

It records programs digitally using the Philips minicassette magnetic audio tape format. The unit connects to the BBC Micro via a 20-way user port connector and draws power from the computer’s power output socket. Firmware is supplied on an EPROM.

Introduced by Ikon Computer Products in July 1983, the Hobbit could store at least 71 KB per side of tape, organized into up to 100 files, with a data transfer rate of 1200 bytes per second.

Date : July 1983

Manufacturer : Ikon
