An acoustic coupler is a device that allows a computer to transmit data over a standard telephone line by converting digital signals into audible tones and sending them through a telephone handset's speaker and microphone. The coupler physically holds the handset in rubber cups to minimise background noise and ensure sound transmission. This acoustic coupler from Moore Reed and Company Ltd was marketed as "universal" because its microphone and speaker are mounted on springs. This means that it can be fitted to almost any shape or size of telephone handset. Connection to the data terminal equipment is via CCITT or 20mA sockets.
