Lift looks at the movement of a mass on a spring balance, as it moves up and down in a lift, and explores some of the forces exerted by the mass. Various velocities or accelerations can be imparted to the lift, and the spring balance records the force of the mass (which is represented in the program by a very small person called Mabel!) acting on it throughout the simulation. The user is able to explore a variety of simple or complex situations through a highly flexible interface, and to trace the path of Mabel using a trail recorder similar to a ticker tape device.
