The evil Altair is using the omni cube to drain the energy from the planet Bomber, it is up to the player as Bomberman to stop him. With an extensive 1 player story mode with 5 worlds to travel through, each with their own sub-bosses and final bosses, the player must travel on a 3D plain, collecting power ups and using bombs to destroy terrain and complete specific objectives.
The option to play 4 player local games is also included in Bomberman 64, with several different maps to choose from and customisable rules, players must aim to be the last bomber standing and avoid blasts from rivals.
Bomberman 64 was full to the brim with secrets that ranged from collectable custom outfits that could be used in the multiplayer mode to an entire secret world that would only be accessible by collecting all 5 golden cards in each stage. Doing this would also reveal the secret true ending to the game upon defeating the final boss.
