The Phloopy Drive connects to the BBC Microcomputer and stores data on continuous loop of magnetic tape (similar to the Sinclair Microdrive or 8-track tape). Each Phloopy can store 100KB of data. It uses nine read/write heads: eight for storing data, and one for a clock track. The Phloopy Drive is controlled by the BBC Micro but has an internal 8049 microprocessor allowing it to perform actions such as formatting a new Phloopy while the BBC Micro is free to be used. While it is controlled by the user in the same way as a disc unit, it requires a separate interface to be installed in the BBC Micro and is not compatible with a standard disc interface.
