Super Metroid is the third game in the Metroid series.  It follows on from Metroid on the NES and Metroid 2: Return of Samus on the Game Boy.

Often heralded as the originator of the Metroidvania genre (alongside Castlevania: Symphony of the Night), Super Metroid sees Bounty Hunter Samus Aran travel to the planet Zebes on a mission to return the last Metroid to captivity.

The game is a 2D platformer with exploration elements; Samus's progress is limited to available weapons and abilities.   With upgraded mobility and weaponry, the entire game map is available to explore.

Super Metroid is lauded for its atmosphere and soundtrack, and much like the Metroid on the NES, it draws a lot of inspiration from Ridley Scott's Alien.

In Europe the game came in a large box bundled with a "Player's Guide" containing maps and hints for players new to the Metroid style of game. 
It is available on Switch as part of Nintendo's Switch Online service, and on the SNES Mini released in 2017.
