The IPM Smilephone was manufactured in cooperation with Teknema, using the technology from Teknema's award-winning Internet TV Set-Top Box. Some documentation also refers to it as the Teknema Internet screenphone.

The web enabled telephone brought the power, functionality and ease of use of Teknema's Internet access products, with the functions most commonly found on traditional screen-based telephones, such as Address Book, Caller ID, etc. through a simple phone set, colour LCD screen, and keyboard connected to a phoneline or Ethernet LAN. You could place phone calls, surf the internet, bank and communicate all with a single easy to use product.

It featured a colour graphic interface via a 7.5-inch touch-screen and/or keyboard. It came with a stylus pointer to use on the touchscreen and had an ISO 7816 Smart Card reader. It could be customised to have on-screen icons to automatically connect with specific Internet content and services. This product was advertised as ideal for customers who didn't own or didn't want a PC but still wanted to join the Internet, and for everybody who just wanted another Internet 'access point' in their home or office.

The internet phone was designed to use a single phone line for both voice and data through the built-in 56Kbps modem, two phone lines to stay online while talking on the phone, or one phone line for voice and an Ethernet interface (10BaseT) to connect through a LAN, cable or DSL modem.

Samples were due to be available in 4Q99 with Teknema seeking content partners, OEMs and distributors for the Internet Screenphone.
