Crusader: No Remorse

Originally a PC MS DOS game, it was released on the Saturn a year later.

The game is an isometric action adventure game and centres on the character of the silencer, a half human enforcer, who mercilessly hunts down resistance fighters, opposing the strict regime of the WEC organisation, who control every aspect of people’s lives by the monopoly of the energy reserves.

During a raid on one of the rebel secret bases, the Silencer and his group are ambushed, with all but him killed, during the attack, his normally suppressed emotions, including remorse are returned, and he joins the resistance, most of whom are very suspicious they are being infiltrated.

After several successful missions, in which key installations are destroyed, he gains the trust of his new allies, eventually working up to a showdown with the WEC leader Draygon.

The game’s narration is through well acted cut scenes, which not only set the missions, but also punctuate the levels themselves, as the Silencer talks to his handler to open doors and warn him of close by traps, while at the rebel base he can talk to rebel personnel who give him the backstory to their struggle.

When on a mission, via lockers and teleporters, the Silencer gains a whole arsenal of extreme weaponry, starting small with pistols and rifles, but soon adding rocket launchers and vaporising guns, some of which will set the police and technicians in the area on fire. The silencer can also plant proximity bombs, and even control spider bombs that walk on the ground, to destroy targets around corners, or take out security alarms that would give his position away.

If an alarm sounds the area will swamp with police and walking robots, and even remote Gatling guns and rockets. The alarm can be deactivated by accessing a panel.

Some areas are locked behind a key code, a technician can crack the code, or it can be found on the bodies of the security forces or technicians.

The game is notable for the sheer amount of scenery damage that can be inflicted on the area, tanks of explosive liquid will erupt when hit, killing anyone close enough to it, railings and walls can be damaged, also if taking out one of the WEC stations, a main target will have to be reached and destroyed with bombs or gunfire. The Silencer is then given a short amount of time to get to the nearest transporter for the handler to extract him for missions end.

The game was followed up by a sequel which was on the MS DOS platform only called Crusader No Regret.
