Osborne launches the first portable computer, the Osborne 1
3rd April 1981
On the 3rd April 1981, Adam Osborne unveiled the first commercially successful portable computer at the West Coast Computer Faire in San Francisco.
The Osborne 1 was a 10kg suitcase-sized portable computer based on the Z80A CPU, and included a 5-inch monitor, two 5.25-inch floppy disk drives, and a full-sized keyboard. However, it did not include a battery and required plugging in to a mains socket. A battery pack later became available which offered one hour of usage.
