60474 STC Reconverter and Power Supplies

Description of Photograph

Photograph of LEO I installation showing the STC Reconverter 44A on the left and main LEO power supply controls to the right.

This image appears in the interactive plan for our Virtual LEO I installation, p31.

Research comments: STC (Standard Telephones & Cables) developed equipment for Lyons with the intention of providing high speed input and output for the computer. The reconverter shown in this photograph changed numbers from decimal (or Sterling incidentally) into binary and vice-versa.

Eventually, the STC part of the LEO project was abandoned. It had been delivered late and then turned out to be unreliable. Fortunately the LEO team had anticipated the failure and already had a replacement scheme in place. (LM)
